Malaysia Adds Thaipusam To State Public Holidays Of Kuala Lumpur And Putrajaya

As was expected, following his statement of last night, Malaysia's Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, announced an hour ago that Malaysia's Government had declared Thaipusam a public holiday in the federal territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, from this year onward. Thaipusam, which was until now a public holiday in Selangor, Penang, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Johor, will occur on Wednesday January 23, in 2008.

Note that Kuala Lumpur is Malaysia's federal capital and its economic centre, and that the stock exchange, the central depository, the central bank and all banks will be closed and as such, there will be no trading, clearing and settlement activities on this date.
