Thailand May Declare August 20 Public Holiday

Thailand's Election Commission chairman, Apichart Sukhagganond, confirmed yesterday that the Prime Minister, Surayud Chulanont, had asked him about the opportunity of making Monday, August 20, 2007, the day after the upcoming constitutional referendum, a one-off public holiday throughout Thailand, since many people would travel long distances to vote, and not having to work the next day would ease their burden, and increase voter turnout.

Analysis: The Election Comission is quoted as being in favor of the idea, but the final decision rests with the government. We will continue to monitor further developments.

Update (Monday, August 6: Bangkok Post and AFP): Speaking on the sidelines of a forum on democracy yesterday, Prime Minister's Office Minister, Thirapat Serirangsan, said the cabinet is likely to agree with his idea of declaring Monday, August 20, 2007, a public holiday in lieu of the referendum date on Sunday.
