Bahamas: Discovery Day Public Holiday Replacement Delayed Until 2008

Sources: The Bahama Journal and Bahamas public holidays. Earlier this week, Minister of State for Culture, Charles Maynard, announced that although the bills were passed in parliament earlier this year, legislation to establish a system of local honours and change the name of the Discovery Day holiday to National Heroes Day won’t come into effect by October 12 (the date of this year's Discovery Day as well as the date of the proposed National Heroes' Day).

What remains to be ironed out, is whether National Heroes' Day will replace Discovery Day, or whether the day will bear a double name (as is the case in Uruguay). Another issue, should both public holidays remain is how to synchronize them, since the Discovery Day public holiday is currently a moving holiday, while the new Heroes' Day public holiday is meant to be always on the fixed date of October 12.
