Sources: The Advertiser (Bendigo, VIC) and Australia public holidays (qppstudio.net). As announced last year by the Victoria State government (see our post of November 9, 2007), it introduced the Public Holidays Amendment Bill 2008 to compensate regional Victorians in 28 regional councils which do not observe the Melbourne Cup public holiday or offer an alternative paid day off.
This bill, which amends the Public Holidays Act 1993, will bring bring these 28 rural councils in line with the 31 metropolitan councils which celebrate Melbourne Cup Day on the first Tuesday in November, giving all Victorian 11 public holidays a year instead of 10.
The aforementioned legislation would also clear up uncertainty about public holidays falling on a weekend, including New Year's Day, Australia Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
