Australia: Melbourne Cup Day To Become Statewide Public Holiday

Sources: The Age/AAP and Australia public holidays. Victoria's Small Business Minister, Joe Helper, announced that legislation would be introduced into state parliament to make Melbourne Cup Day a holiday across the entire State of Victoria, beginning in 2008, except where a council outside Melbourne selects an alternative public holiday in their area.

Currently Melbourne Cup Day is a public holiday, officially, only in metro Melbourne, though, people who have been to Australia at the beginning of November, will attest that it is hard to do business anywhere in Australia on that day.
