India Moves Upcoming Muharram Public Holiday

Sources: Press Information Bureau Government of India and India public holidays. The Government of India has moved its observance of the upcoming Muharram public holiday, from Saturday, January 19, to Sunday, January 20, 2008. While this announcement, technically, only applies to the Delhi/New Delhi Central Government administrative offices, such changes are never initiated by the Indian Government, without some justification from the Indian Sufi Muslim religious authorities. Therefore, this change, which is in line with the one recently announced in Pakistan, is expected to be the norm throughout the parts of India where Muharram is a public holiday.
