Australia's Queensland State Considers Moving Queen's Birthday Public Holiday

Sources: The Courier Mail and Australia public holidays. The Government of Australia's State of Queensland is considering shifting the statewide Queen's Birthday public holiday from the second Monday in June to a date in October, beginning in 2009.

In related news, Queensland opposition leader, Mr. Seeney, said he supported moving one of the public holidays from the first half of the year to the second half, but that he preferred that it be the Labour Day public holiday instead of the Queen's Birthday public holiday.

The main reason for the proposed change is to even out the frequency of public holidays in the state, as Queensland currently has six public holidays between March and June (Queen's Birthday, Anzac Day, Labour Day and three Easter public holidays) but none in the second half of the year until Christmas Day.

The move would be welcomed by retailers, but the horse racing establishment has
reacted negatively to the proposal. No specifics have yet been released about what the changed date could be.
