Spain's La Rioja Announces 2008 Regional Public Holidays

Sources: larioja.com and Spain public holidays. Spain's autonomous region of La Rioja has announced the list of the 12 public holidays to be observed in the autonomous region in 2008: 1/1, 20/3, 21/3, 24/3, 1/5, 9/6, 25/7, 15/8, 1/11, 6/12, 8/12, and 25/12. To these 12 public holidays, each municipality will add 2 municipal public holidays.

Analysis: Conspicuously absent from the above list are January 6 (Epiphany) and October 12 (Día de la Hispanidad) which both fall on a Sunday in 2008. The autonomous region of La Rioja seems to have decided to follow the Spanish tradition of omitting public holidays on the years when they fall on a Sunday, a tradition which was broken by the autonomous region of Castilla y León, which chose, for 2008, to declare the Monday following these 2 holidays as a day in lieu public holiday (see our news post of earlier today).
