Sources: China Daily, China public holidays, Hong Kong public holidays and Taiwan public holidays. The debate that has been going on in China since the beginning of the year (see our news posts of July 16, July 1, May 11 and March 20) has been re-ignited with the arrival of this year's traditional Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, a public holiday today in Taiwan, and tomorrow in Hong Kong, but not in China.
In an attempt to pave the way for change, the municipal government of Weifang (a city in eastern China, famous for its kite-making) decided to give government employees, doctors, teachers and other people working in public institutions the day off to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, although those few (190,000 out of 8 million) who were given Tuesday off were made to work last Saturday.
