Wallis Declares 6 Month Mourning Period Following Death of King

Sources: Radio New Zealand International and Wallis and Futuna public holidays. Wallis' traditional chief minister said at king Tomasi Kulimoetoke's funeral, yesterday, that clans on the island would observe a six-month mourning period, during which it would be taboo to mention the highly sensitive topic of a successor.

Analysis: No changes to Wallis and Futuna public holidays are expected as a consequence of king Tomasi Kulimoetoke's death, since none of the public holidays of Wallis and Futuna are based on the King's birthday or ascension to the throne (as is the case in Tonga, for example). However, as the 6 month ban on choosing a successor ends close to Christmas, it is possible that an additional bridge holiday will be declared around that time, such as Monday, December 24, 2007, for example.
