Bhutan Upcoming Elections To Be Held A Weekday And Declared A Public Holiday

Sources: Kuensel and Bhutan public holidays. Election commissioner, Dasho Kunzang Wangdi, speaking on behalf of the Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB), announced that "We have now decided to conduct the election on a weekday and that day will be declared as a public holiday so that more people can come and vote".

Analysis:
This announcement follows last month's test-run parliamentary elections, held on Saturday, April 21, 2007, and which registered a low voter turnout, due, according to observers, to being held on a Saturday, the sole day available for most people to run errands. The first "live" parliamentary election is expected to be held a year from now.
