The office of President Jose Eduardo dos Santos issued a statement announcing legislative elections, on Friday, September 5, 2008.Although there is no recent historical data on the status of election day in Angola (the last elections were in 1992), our local contacts, and the choice of a weekday date, lead us to believe that Friday, September 5, 2008, will be declared as a one-off public holiday in Angola.
Update, June 6: The Angolan government approved on Thursday here the Law-decree on the observance of a bank holiday on September 5, Election Day, in an extraordinary session of the Cabinet Council. Source: Angola Press Agency (Luanda).
