Sources: Marianas Variety and Saïpan public holidays (CNMI). The Parliament of the CNMI is about to vote whether to reintroduce austerity Fridays, whereby government offices close every other Friday, and employees who do not work on official CNMI holidays are not be paid for that day.
If implemented from April 1 to September 8, 2008, these measures would make up for the government’s $7.2 million cost overruns since October 1, 2007. Public Law 15-24, of 2007, already mandated the biweekly austerity holidays, but it expired on September 30, 2007.
