Panama Minister Announces Support For Return To Movable Public Holidays

Sources: La Prensa, our post of August 25, and Panama public holidays. The Minister of Tourism of Panama, Rubén Blades, has recently jumped into the ongoing debate concerning the return of the practice of moving fixed date public holidays to adjoin a weekend so as to have long weekends on the occasion of public holidays.

As is common in Latin America, the bill currently being drafted would move public holidays that occur on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays to the nearest weekend, and some public holidays would be exempted from this new rule (New Year, May Day, Mothers' Day, Christmas, and Colombia Separation Day).

What is interesting is that the new law would also move public holidays that occur on Saturdays and Sundays, to the next Monday, something common in North America and Europe, but that is almost unheard of in Central America and South America.
