The National Electoral Commission (NEC) has selected the date of Sunday, December 23, 2007, for the upcoming general elections, the first since the September 2006 bloodless military coup.Analysis: As conjectured in our post of August 20, , it is very likely that a one-off public holiday will be declared on the following Monday (ie. either December 17, or December 24), as was done earlier this month for the day after the charter referendum (our news story of August 7) to allow people time to travel back to their place of employment, after traveling to their place of voter registration (often quite different) to vote in the elections.
