Chile Introduces Law to Restrict Retail Activity During Its 3 Compulsory Public Holidays
Source: La Nación. Yesterday, the Chilean government introduced a new law proposal to the Chamber of Deputies, under the reference Boletín N° 4976, concerning the compulsory character (carácter obligatorio e irrenunciable) of New Year (January 1), Independence Day (September 18) and Christmas Day (December 25). This new law, if passed, would modify the law N° 19.973, of September 10, 2004, and extend to all workers of the retail sector, the rights previously only enjoyed by retail employees whose store was located in a shopping mall (centros comerciales o malls), and would probably mean that on these 3 aforementioned public holidays, retail shopping would grind to a halt, except for 1-person, self-employed stores.
